The environmental performance of products has become a key issue for businesses, as society and consumers are increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of the products they are using.
One standardized approach for measuring the environmental assessment of a product is a Life Cycle Assessment, which is done according to International Standards Organization (ISO) 14040, 14025 and 14044. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a comprehensive evaluation of the environmental effects of a product at every stage, known as a Cradle to the Grave approach. The ultimate goal when using the LCA, is Pollution Reduction and Prevention.
The LCA assesses the environmental impact of a product at each step of its life cycle:
There is also a Cradle to Cradle certification available. The Cradle to Cradle certification has integrated a more holistic approach to the life cycle analysis by expanding the scope of requirements to include the use of environmentally safe and healthy materials; design for material reuse, such as recycling or composting; the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency in the manufacturing processes; efficient use of water, and maximum water quality associated with production in the manufacturing processes; and instituting strategies for social responsibility through corporate and organizational policy making.
